Getting Physical and Loving it!
Did you know that May was National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? It is interesting to think of how much things have changed in the last decades. Many Americans are less healthy earlier in life than in previous generations. Some stats report that only about 1 in 6 people aged 15+ participate in sport or exercise regularly… although we probably have more exercise equipment and health clubs available to us. So, what is the disconnect?
You have probably heard someone complain or right down dread going to the gym… it might even be you! Ironically, many people turn to activities that they find “boring’ or simply “not fun” for exercise.
Perhaps, as the summer months approach, you can keep these things in mind as you strive to increase your physical activity:
- Find something fun to do that gets you moving and keeps you engaged. This might mean it is time to try something new (Salsa dance, anyone?). Ultimately, the goal is to stay active. You are more likely to get moving by doing something you enjoy. It’s a win-win!
- Whatever you do, set realistic and manageable goals. Use tools to keep you on task like a daily log. If you place too much emphasis on larger goals, break them down into goals you can achieve more readily.
- Check your motives as to why you want to exercise. For instance, maybe weight loss should not be the primary goal to exercise but rather a more active lifestyle. In the end, if you are more active and happier doing it, the pounds will likely come off.
