National Senior Health and Fitness Day – Making Healthy Aging a Priority
You can’t turn on the television these days without hearing someone’s opinion on health care in the United States. While our elected officials debate the topic, there is something we can do in the meantime – focus on staying healthy!
One of the most important lessons that has come out of the media coverage of health care is that we, as a society, need to place more of an emphasis on preventative health behaviors, activities that keep the body and mind healthy. This is especially true for older adults, as this portion of the population is most at risk for experiencing increasing health problems.
In an effort to raise awareness on this issue, several groups have joined together to promote the 17th annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day on May 26. The focus of the event is to raise awareness about the benefits associated with regular physical exercise, as well as highlight how older adults can incorporate these activities into everyday life.
If you need help getting motivated, AARP offers some great tips on how to get started, and the National Institute on Aging has wonderful information on how to find an exercise program that fits your needs. Just remember, every little bit helps, and any change you can make in your daily routine that promotes a healthier lifestyle is a good one.

Great post Dr. Long!
As I have said before, we need to push for National Senior Health and Fitness MONTH. Not just awareness, but action. It’s the type of ‘Healthcare Reform’ that should really be getting the attention.
Improving the health and well-being of our elders would have a dramatic effect of the cost of healthcare in our country.
Keep up the great work.
