Playtime with Dad Helps Kids Take Risks
One of the best things about dads is that they are not moms. And sometimes this means doing things with their kids that moms would just rather not.
All families are different, but for many dads, some of the best moments with their kids involve learning new, daring, physical activities. Some research even shows that there is something unique about the way dads play and interact with their kids; it empowers their children to take more chances, more risk and explore the world. More so than moms, dads encourage kids to overcome their limits.
I may be falling victim to some old, untrue stereotypes, but I was very clear with my husband before our kids came along that he would be responsible for the following: teaching our kids to ride two-wheel bikes, swimming with them when the temperature was under 80 degrees, riding the roller coasters, teaching them to drive a car, and volunteering to be their coach in Little League.
Sometimes kids struggle to embrace their dads’ enthusiasm and frustrations can arise – in both the kids and dads. Want to connect with your kid, teach them a few things, and get along at the same time? Try these tips to insure that a fun time – and great memories – will be had by all:
- Talk about your child’s past successes. Help your kids remember all the things they have learned and
accomplished. Build up their confidence by reminding them of how much they have learned in the past. - Be open about what they’ll experience — surprises aren’t usually good. Be open with your kids about the new activity. Let them know what they can expect, how long it will take, and why they should give it a shot.
- Baby steps. Instead of expecting your son to jump in to the deep end on your first trip to the pool this summer, try setting up small, easily-accomplished goals. Work up to the big stuff.
- Make praise specific. Instead of saying “great job,” try saying “I loved how hard you ran to catch that fly ball!”
- Let them know you’ll be there. Reassure your nervous daughter that you will be right next to her the entire way down the block. If her bike starts to wobble or fall, you will be right beside her to help her up.
